HORSE TRAINING
Colts started  ~  Problem horses  ~  Tune ups

Rich believes that some horses need a tune up by a skilled professional to keep them going well, but not all horses need a long term training program. Some horses just need an occasional day, week, or month to keep them well trained for their owner. Others may need a longer training period.

                   TRAINING HORSE OF THE MONTH

calvaryCalvary, a 7 year old 17.3 hand registered Spotted Draft horse, owned by Larry Reiter, is our Training Horse of the Month. Larry grew up on his family farm and has fond memories of riding his father's gentle hard working draft horses bareback. He decided that he wanted to buy a riding horse of his own, so 2 years ago he bought Calvary, a very gentle and good dispositioned gelding, and took him to Rich so that Rich could train him and teach Larry how to ride him. Unfortunately, life does not always lead us down our chosen path. Larry's 96 year old father became ill and Larry made the decision to care for him. This is a full time job and does not leave Larry any time to ride. He decided to keep Calvary in training with Rich so that when Larry is ready to ride, Calvary will be ready for him. He has been in training with Rich during these two years and Larry is very pleased with his training and care. Larry states that "Rich always insists that Calvary demonstrates good manners. This is very important to me. Rich is such a good care taker. I am so pleased that Calvary is with him. I can't wait to start riding him under Rich's supervision!" Congratulations, Calvary, Training Horse of the Month!

SADDLE OF THE MONTH
saddleRich has a unique collection of older saddles. He knows the story behind each saddle and enjoys learning about each one. The saddle featured this month used to belong to Chuck Cooper, a legend in the local horse world. Joan Blair was kind enough to give this saddle to Rich after Chuck passed away. Chuck Cooper was a blacksmith for over 30 years, and was one of the finest horsemen around. He had a huge impact on Rich as well as on the entire horse community in this part of the country. Chuck helped Rich get started in the training business and sent him his first training horse in 1970. He helped Rich get started in calf roping and in riding bucking bulls. As a youngster in the training business, Rich was always able to ask Chuck for advice about what to do with his training horses. Chuck's saddle has a special place in Rich's tackroom as well as in his heart.

THIS OLD SADDLE by JESSE BRADSHAW (Rich's granddaughter)

A young cowboy walked into a tack shop.

The sign out front said "Buy Sell N' Swap.

An old man came in from the back

And asked if he was lookin' for any tack.

The cowboy took one sweepin' look.

The old man saw something catch his eye in that look he took.

The old man looked at the buck and back

And saw that old saddle that sat on the rickety rack.

He said "Son, I can tell you a tall tale

But that saddle there ain't for sale."

The cowboy looked at the old hand

And said,"Well, sir, I've got some time and as for the price, I understand."

The old man gave the cowboy a little glance

Took a can of chew out of his pants.

He said, "I bought that saddle back in '48

When I was breakin' broncs for the Diamond Ace.

That piece o' leather rode more horses than you've ever seen,"

Put a dip in his mouth and put the can back in his jeans.

"After a while I rode out to another spread

And started punchin cattle instead.

Had a mean ol' geldin' in my string.

Hell, he thought he was King.

That saddle sat on that mean cuss every day,

Helped me turn him into my best horse, that ole bay.

That saddle there was used every mile

And it's been good to me all the while.

A good saddle's hard to come by, son,

And that one there is the best one.

Yeah, the leather and tooling may be a little worn

And there might be a few scuffs on the horn,

But that saddle is the best you can find.

It's one of a kind."

The cowboy looked at the saddle and smiled

While the old man sat there and thought for a while.

He said, "You know what, son,

The saddle's yours, consider the deal done."

The cowboy looked at the old man

And put one hundred dollars in his hand.

He said, "It ain't much, but it's all I got

And don't you worry, I'll never sell that saddle I just bought."

The old man helped the young buck

Get the saddle into the truck.

He said, "Don't be afraid to use her hard.

That's why she tells the story she does, because of every scar."

The cowboy said his good-byes and thank you.

He had every intent to use that saddle, too.

The next day he had that saddle on his horse for work.

His buddy said, "Where the hell you get that hunk o' leather?" with a smirk?

The young cowboy just grinned and said,

"This old saddle has a story better than any you read."

      BETTY ROSE

bettyroseWhen you walk into Rich's training stable, you notice that it is neat and clean and that the horses are well cared for and content. This is due to Betty Rose's hard efforts. She has worked for Rich for more than 25 years and is quite a horsewoman! She has learned how to handle just about any type of horse, cleans stalls well in record time, and makes sure that Rich's barn is well run and organized. She can pull a mane in less than 5 minutes. When she first started to work for Rich, it took her at least 30 minutes. Betty is so kind and helpful, and always makes the customer or visitor feel right at home. Rich says "There are very few people who are irreplaceable, but Betty is truly one of them! I can always count on her. I don't know what I would do without her." Betty really enjoys working for Rich. "The days are always interesting. I love working with the horses. You never know what will happen next. Rich is so kind. He never yells when things go wrong." The next time you stop by Rich's barn, take a good look around at the well cared for horses and neat barn, and appreciate all of Betty's hard work!

WESTERN LESSONS
Young or old, it's never too late to enjoy riding! Your horse or mine.

                     LESSON PERSON OF THE MONTH

marlene-latigoMarlene Heimen is Rich's Lesson Person of the Month. Marlene had moved to Middlefield and in 1979 called Rich to ask him to trailer a horse to a vet clinic for her. After a long conversation in the truck on the way to and from the clinic, Marlene decided to go to Rich for lessons. She still rides with him! Along the way, Marlene has had many different riding experiences, buying some quarter horses from Rich and settling on riding dressage and trail riding. She decided to buy a morgan, and in 2002, she and her husband traveled to Jackson Morgan Ranch in Montana to buy a morgan gelding. She found a beautiful gelding there and named him Latigo in honor of one of her riding instructors and mentors, Laddie Andahazy. She was able to buy Latigo, who was a lot of horse and rather spooky because she knew that she had Rich at home in Ohio to train him for her and teach her how to ride him. While she was riding with Rich, Marlene was also taking lessons with many of the famous dressage teachers in the area. Rich (always the learner) would ask her what they said about how to handle different training situations and problems. Marlene has been a great source of information for Rich. Marlene will continue to ride with Rich as well as with some of the top dressage instructors. She learns so much from all of them! Congratulations Marlene Heimen, Lesson Person of the Month!
