Thank you for all of those who attended our first Private Treaty Horse Sale. Keep checking our web site for the date of the next sale!

Ray Smego bought Baxter from Rich in 2000. What a wonderful horse he has been. When you add their ages together they equal 102!
HORSE TRAINING Colts started ~ Problem horses ~ Tune ups
Rich believes that some horses need a tune up by a skilled professional to keep them going well, but not all horses need a long term training program. Some horses just need an occasional day, week, or month to keep them well trained for their owner. Others may need a longer training period.
TRAINING HORSE OF THE MONTH
This month we have two CO-TRAINING HORSES OF THE MONTH!
One of the horses is Icon, a great looking 5 year old gypsy vanner gelding. He also has the nickname of "Mustachio." Check out his picture and you will see how he earned that name! Jeannie Lowe owns Mustachio. She has owned horses for years and keeps them at home at her beautiful Hamden farm. Four years ago Jeannie had a bad fall from one of her horses and had not ridden since then. She went to the Equine Affaire and saw the gypsy vanners there and fell in love with their striking looks and wonderful disposition. She knew that this was the breed for her, and bought her gelding from Old Mill Farm in PA last September and continued with his ground work. She contacted her trusted friend, Rich Bradshaw, and arranged to take Mustachio there for training. She had a big decision to make. Is she ever going to ride again or give it up? Rich had Mustachio in training for 2 months. One day when Jeannie was watching Rich ride him, he got off and told Jeannie to get on! Rich said that "This horse told me that he was ready for Jeannie to ride him." She got on and was riding again! Mustachio was gentle and easy for her to ride. Jeannie knows that she will continue to need help with her wonderful horse. She is taking him home and her daughter will ride him, also. Jeannie will continue to trailer him to Rich's for lessons and to follow his advice. With Rich's help, Mustachio is certainly a dream come true for Jeannie!
Sorceress is our other CO-TRAINING HORSE OF THE MONTH. She is a 4 year old mare who was imported from Germany when she was 18 months old. Her owner was killed in a car accident and Sorceress was turned out and never handled. She went to a rescue facility where the handlers were afraid of her, so she continued to live outdoors without any handling. Her crooked right front foot continued to turn outward and her halter had grown into her head! Emily Devey, who owns and operates Falcon Camp in Carrollton, Ohio, rescued her. Rescuing horses is nothing new to Emily. Previously, she rescued Sabrina, an arab mare. Rich gentled her and trained her to be a responsible citizen. She is now a part of Emily's horse camp and is ridden by the campers. Sorceress was loaded into a trailer and Emily took her to Rich's for training. What a project!! She was so afraid of people that she would not even let anyone touch her. Rich and Patrick went to work with her, and Sorceress relaxed and started to learn to trust people. Rich loves working with rescue horses. He feels that each one needs to learn to be useful in some way, whether it is to learn how to be a reliable riding horse or a beautiful pasture ornament. They were able to remove her halter and teach her how to allow her feet to be handled. She is even allowing them to touch her ears. Sorceress learned to love to be groomed, and now she is being ridden. Even with her crooked front leg she is smooth and sound. Emily was thrilled as they put her on a longe line and she rode her for the first time! Sorceress will go home to Falcon Camp and the riding director will ride her to continue her education. At last, Sorceress with have a wonderful home and a valuable career!
Falcon Camp is a beautiful residential summer camp for horse crazy girls. Each session is a week long and the girls ride for 3 to 4 hours a day and participate in seminars and enjoyable horse games. If you are interested in learning more information about the camp, you can call Emily Devey at 1-800-837-CAMP. Who knows! Maybe your child will be able to ride Sorceress or Sabrina, or one of the other rescue horses at the camp!

SADDLE OF THE MONTH Rich has a unique collection of older saddles. He knows the story behind each saddle and enjoys learning about each one. This month's saddle is one that Rich bought because it reminded him of the first saddle that he owned. His parents bought the saddle, bridle and breast collar for him for $60 when he was 12 yers old. Like his first saddle, it has the silver diamond studding on it which was popular at the time. These saddles were made during the 1950's and 1960's. They were made to fit narrower horses as most horses at that time were not as wide as our horses are today. There is no padding on the seat as this was not used at that time. The saddle that is featured this month has tapadaros on the stirrups, but Rich's first saddle did not. Rich said that "I just had to own this saddle. It brought back a flood of memories of my first horse and my first saddle. It was an introduction to a lifetime of horses and tack."
THIS OLD SADDLE by JESSE BRADSHAW (Rich's granddaughter)
A young cowboy walked into a tack shop.
The sign out front said "Buy Sell N' Swap.
An old man came in from the back
And asked if he was lookin' for any tack.
The cowboy took one sweepin' look.
The old man saw something catch his eye in that look he took.
The old man looked at the buck and back
And saw that old saddle that sat on the rickety rack.
He said "Son, I can tell you a tall tale
But that saddle there ain't for sale."
The cowboy looked at the old hand
And said,"Well, sir, I've got some time and as for the price, I understand."
The old man gave the cowboy a little glance
Took a can of chew out of his pants.
He said, "I bought that saddle back in '48
When I was breakin' broncs for the Diamond Ace.
That piece o' leather rode more horses than you've ever seen,"
Put a dip in his mouth and put the can back in his jeans.
"After a while I rode out to another spread
And started punchin cattle instead.
Had a mean ol' geldin' in my string.
Hell, he thought he was King.
That saddle sat on that mean cuss every day,
Helped me turn him into my best horse, that ole bay.
That saddle there was used every mile
And it's been good to me all the while.
A good saddle's hard to come by, son,
And that one there is the best one.
Yeah, the leather and tooling may be a little worn
And there might be a few scuffs on the horn,
But that saddle is the best you can find.
It's one of a kind."
The cowboy looked at the saddle and smiled
While the old man sat there and thought for a while.
He said, "You know what, son,
The saddle's yours, consider the deal done."
The cowboy looked at the old man
And put one hundred dollars in his hand.
He said, "It ain't much, but it's all I got
And don't you worry, I'll never sell that saddle I just bought."
The old man helped the young buck
Get the saddle into the truck.
He said, "Don't be afraid to use her hard.
That's why she tells the story she does, because of every scar."
The cowboy said his good-byes and thank you.
He had every intent to use that saddle, too.
The next day he had that saddle on his horse for work.
His buddy said, "Where the hell you get that hunk o' leather?" with a smirk?
The young cowboy just grinned and said,
"This old saddle has a story better than any you read."
BETTY ROSE
When you walk into Rich's training stable, you notice that it is neat and clean and that the horses are well cared for and content. This is due to Betty Rose's hard efforts. She has worked for Rich for more than 25 years and is quite a horsewoman! She has learned how to handle just about any type of horse, cleans stalls well in record time, and makes sure that Rich's barn is well run and organized. She can pull a mane in less than 5 minutes. When she first started to work for Rich, it took her at least 30 minutes. Betty is so kind and helpful, and always makes the customer or visitor feel right at home. Rich says "There are very few people who are irreplaceable, but Betty is truly one of them! I can always count on her. I don't know what I would do without her." Betty really enjoys working for Rich. "The days are always interesting. I love working with the horses. You never know what will happen next. Rich is so kind. He never yells when things go wrong." The next time you stop by Rich's barn, take a good look around at the well cared for horses and neat barn, and appreciate all of Betty's hard work!
