RANCH COW SORTING

This month we have two co/cow sorters of the month. Donna Boggs and Chris Shulman organized the Monday night practices for cow sorters who want to try the sport and play at it for fun. That was five years ago and the Monday night group is still going strong in their fifth year and growing larger every year!

A lifelong horse enthusiast and long time rider, Donna Boggs has been involved in many equine disciplines. Although she started riding saddle seat and western, through most of her riding career she rode and showed hunt seat on the A circuit with "Lewis and Lewis." She competed at the regional level, culminating with a qualification for the national finals at Harrisburg. During this time she and her husband, Jack, developed a stable of race horses that they still have today. Having ridden in several disciplines early on, it wasn't much of a stretch to return to the western style of riding when her show career was over. Having spent many years showing, she wasn't interested in competing anymore, but was still interested in riding and improving her western skills. After watching an old friend ride on cows, she decided that would fit right in with her new plan of trail riding and just having fun with her horse. She sold all of her english tack and bought a western horse, western saddle and bridle. There was only one obstacle. All of the people who did "cows" were competing. The group she rode with was gearing up for the competitions and she felt like she was interfering with their practice sessions. After a conversation with Rich, they decided to form a new group that would learn about cows, but the emphasis would be on education and fun, and not competition. This group has gone from "Cow Work 101" to "Cow Work 501" and is still going strong. After five years, they are still considered the beginner group, and welcome all the newbies, but don't get in the way if they need to sort a cow out of the herd!

My name is Christine Shulman. I fell off my first horse when I was five years old. In my teens, I lived and breathed horses. I showed western pleasure and rode for several well-known trainers. I even majored in equestrian management at Wooster College. Now let's fast forward several decades, and horses are still my number one passion. My husband and I own a horse farm in Novelty,Ohio, where we formerly bred world-class halter paint and quarter horses. I now spend my summer days riding my little cutter, Cat, in the wonderful Metropark system throughout Northeast Ohio. And, once a week a group of us head to the Geauga County Fairgrounds (or to Rich's outdoor arena, depending on the weather) where Rich teaches us the fine art of cow sorting. It's really just a chance for us to have fun and get the most out of our horses in an environment where our age and skill level don't matter at all. Even though I'm in my 50's, when I'm out sorting cows, I feel like I'm back in my 20's.
